Marquis of Lothian Joins Battle Trust 'Patrons'

Michael, Marquis of Lothian, Lord Kerr, joins the Trust's Committee of High Patronage

The Trustees are delighted to announce that the Lord Kerr, descendant of the man who received confirmation of Cope's defeat at Berwick on Tweed on September 22nd 1745 - as depicted cartoon wise - has joined the Committee of High Patronage.



Our High Patrons list includes many descendants of the commanders on both sides at the battle in 1745

When the Trust was initially established in 2006 the Trustees wrote to the heirs of those who led the two opposing armies seeking their patronage for the campaign. The ancestors of Lord Kerr, the Marquis of Lothian, owned Newbattle Abbey and its lands from the Reformation which of course included the Barony of Prestoungrange.

Patrons are being asked in the coming months to assist in the continuing lobby for Scottish Government support and the Appeal to private donors

As readers here will be aware, the Trust has set the goal of creating a Living History Centre in Prestonpans to interpret and present the lessons of the battle in 1745 and including a pavilion for the 104 metres Tapestry. On current estimates this will cost £7m and government support is sought for £5m with the Trust itself seeking the balancing £2m from private donors. The Trust is a Scottish Charity so UK tax paying donors allow of refunds from HMRC of 25p to the Trust for every £ donated.
