BBC Radio Scotland tells Goth Tales from the Dean Tavern and Prestoungrange

Billy Kay's People's History Talks Gothenburg

As an important part of the Radio Scotland's People's History Series, Billy Kay's 25 minute recording is well worth a listen. [It can be heard privately on request at The Prestoungrange Gothenburg.]

The Dean Tavern took pride of place, rightly so, but Jim Forster of the Historical Association, Josie Johnson former barman and Adele Conn today's Montjoye, all made contributions. They recalled Byng Boys' football games, the masons and the rest lining the bar, its absolute cleanliness ... and of course the future we hold in trust today in Prestonpans through the Arts Festival.

The BBC caption read as folows:

[People's History: The Gothenburg Experiment

At the turn of the 20th century a Swedish project to curb alcohol abuse and create reformed public houses where profits were channelled for the benefit of the community, put down roots in Scotland.

Billy Kay visits the Dean Tavern in Newtongrange and the Prestoungrange Gothenburg in Prestonpans to discover that the Gothenburg experiment is on-going in the Lothians.]
