Dolphinstoun Appoint Herbert Coutts MBE as Bailie

Dolphinstoun's new Bailie

Dr Julian Wills of Dolphinstoun, Baron of Dolphinstoun, was pleased to announce at the Session of the Courts held on January 16th 2008 that Herbert Coutts, recently honoured by HM The Queen as Member of The British Empire [MBE], has been appointed Bailie in replacement of Anthony Gillingham. This new appointment runs from the Lenten Session of the Courts and thereafter until the same may be recalled.

Herbert Coutts brings to the Office a very wide experience after 35 years in Edinburgh City's recreation, cultural and library services. From 1998 until his retirement late in 2006 he was Director of Culture and Leisure there and oversaw many major projects including the refurbishmnet of the Usher Hall. In earlier years he played a key role in creating the City Art Centre in 1980, the restoration of the Scott Monument in 1999 and the creation of Makar's Court, dubbed Scotland's Poet's Corner the year before. He was also closely concerned with the collation of historical records of the Bailies of Edinburgh.

Dolphinstoun is wholly committed to the socioeconomic regeneration of local communities in Prestonpans and Wallyford through the arts. Herbert Coutts is already working as a Trustee of the Battle of Prestonpans 1745 Heritage Trust particularly concerned with convening the Battle of Prestonpans Biennial Symposium intent on bringing all involved stakeholders at all levels in the community into a discussion and debating forum. These potentially include those who are campaigning for the proper commemoration of the Battle of Pinkie in 1547 which took place across and close by the baronial lands.
