1722 Waggonway and its September 'Big Dig' archaeologically speaking!

Protecting and Understanding our 1722 Heritage ....

You may or may not know that a 'scratch' group has been researching the Tranent-Cockenzie Waggonway for the last few years - and as time has passed, many local people have joined us in wanting to celebrate this most historic (but forgotten) of Scottish Railways. We've got signage in place and details on the APP alongside the 1745 Battle Walk which crosses the Waggonway [prestonpans 1745 free download from Apple and Android]. Alan Braby has created an excellent set of drawings of the Waggonway HERE in use centuries ago.... and there are three Interpretation Boards coming shortly ... to consolidate all this and carry the whole project forward ....

We have formed the 1722 Waggonway Heritage Group to manage 'The Waggonway Project' - part of which is now the archaelogical excavation and investigation at Cockenzie Harbour, the climax of which will be the 'Cockenzie Big Dig' to take place in September, when everyone can come along and pick up a trowel - think Time Team but in our wee village! There will of course be many other events taking place over the 10 days of the dig, including open pan salt making (which we are really excited about!) All of this will be under the watchful gaze of Andy Robertson our county archaeologist!

Here's how Alan Braby thinks it used to look to sea gulls and gannets!

Such social enterprise obviously incurs certain costs in the preparation and delivery, and that's where crowdfunding comes in - so if you spare a quid or two we'd be hugely grateful, and you'd be helping celebrate and protect the heritage of East Lothian for future generations!
