Prestonpans Tapestry Goes on Display in Corby: November 25th/ 30th

Corby's Grampian Club Hosts Tapestry Exhibition

Widely known as England's most Scottish town, it was only a matter of time before the Prestonpans Tapestry should go on exhibition there. Now, for the coming week up to and including St Andrew's Day, it will hang in The Grampian Club.

As that 'Club' name suggests it's got Scottish roots, a co-operative established by thousands of migrants to the town from Aberdeen and Glasgow in the 1930s and 1950s seeking and finding homes there, and finding work with Stewart and Lloyd's steel mills. The mills may have closed down in the 1970s but Corby has been a designated 'new' town since the 1950s and sits astride the A1 which means it has been able to attract new activities and employment.

A Second Reason for being in Corby ...

As well as displaying the Battle of Prestonpans Tapestry in town, the Prestoungrange Arts Festival is recruiting embroiderers for 6/ 10 English panels in its latest artwork, the Scottish Diaspora Tapestry. Volunteers have already come forward and the historical bases for the several panels are getting clearer by the day, but final details will be put in place during the week. The 'true' story as to why Corby is England's most Scottish town will soon be stitched.

ALL INVITED TO THE GRAMPIAN CLUB TO MEET & DISCUSS

An open invitation has gone out to everyone Scottish or just fascinated or intrigued to come along to see the artwork and discusss the Diaspora Tapestry that's planned. The Grampian Club itself has some 3000 members so more than a few are expected! And its selection of whiskies is legendary.
