Looking to The Heritage Lottery for Battle Campaign Support

Your Heritage Application to be tabled at Lottery Fund

The Trustees are, as all Supporters well know, committed to seek to raise capex funding of upwards of £7m to enable the Visitor Centre to open in 2011. Discussions have already been held with The Heritage Lottery Fund in Edinburgh and other potential sponsors and donors. This December a bold application for a 'Your Heritage' Lottery Grant with matching funds from the Trust is being submitted for a total of £59,000. It has three main purposes, all involving the widest community participation across Prestonpans. Each phase constitutes a deliberate stepping stone to the end result aspired to.

1. Community Fieldwork

This first phase involves historical and archaeological research using a field topographic survey and a metal detecting survey. Volunteers will be active in the metal detecting work.

2. Community Symposium

Commencing in 2008 and convened every other year thereafter, a biennial Symposium will bring together all those with a keen interest in the Battle of Prestonpans and its impacts. As they meet they will involve the community as widely as possible and their sessions will normally take place during the days prior to the annual re-enactments.

3. Interpretation of the Battlefield

Markers will be placed across the battlefield as well as additional interpretation boards. Volunteer Guides will be scripted and trained and an audio visual interpretation created - for use in Prestonpans of course, but also accessible here at the website.

P.S. It was also pleasing to see that as 2007 drew to a close, the East Lothian Courier highlighted for September 2007 the progress we have all been able to make thus far.
