We Picked Litter on the Bing: April 29th

Good as our promises ...

Trustee architect Gareth Bryn-Jones [shown atop the bing], the Poet Laureate, John Lindsay, and Supporters at large gathered on Sunday April 29th for 2 hours on litter picking duties at the Battle Bing. It is of course a key destination of choice for most wishing to appreciate the course of the Battle in 1745. Its interpretation plates are currently under repair by East Lothian Council.

By late-May the Trustees' Portakabin/ Temporary Visitor Centre will have been installed [under Trustee Kristine Cunningham's leadership] for six months donated by a truly generous sponsor, and whensoever the Prince's Battle Flag flies atop the bing rest assured that Visitor Centre will be open - and able to offer extra information, displays and guidebooks.

The litter sweep was one of several on the day and was organised in association with Stuart Pryde, the local Principal Amenities Officer. It should have been anticipated that most litter would have been blown away from the top of the bing and be nestling amongst the stinging nettles and in the thickets at its base. And we all soon learnt that was the way it was. But it was still a pleasure to walk to the top with a youngster just for the view, then back down again.

Top scorers were crisp packets, cans, bottles and, separately, their tops. All made their way into those elegant pink bags provided with the HandyPickers by East Lothian Council. Then back to The Prestoungrange Gothenburg to claim the traditional litter collectors' reward of a Gothenburger.

The press reported the broad sweep of Stuart Pryde's campaigning
