V. Climbing the Battle Bing and Charging Across the Waggonway

Honouring the Bing and the Waggonway

Accompanied by the Alan Breck Regimental Pipes and Drums, before noon the re-enactors marched from Bankton House to climb the Battle Bing to honour the Prince's Battle Flag flying high there; then they marched down along to the Memorial Cairn where the Prince laid a wreath to all who died in 1745. After that the two armies marched north along the Waggonway to re-enact the Highland Charge across that obstacle and the cornfield stubble both sides of it just after dawn on 21st September 1745, with the redcoats fleeing west before them towards the unwelcoming walls of Preston House. The first picture by John Lindsay shows that very cornfield, without the snooks or sheaves it would have had in 1745, just after harvesting early this September. Many of the other pictures were taken for the Trust by Supporter Garry Menzies.
