The Prince in Derby Looking Fine!

Allan Ramsay's Portrait of Prince Charles Edward

With so much concern lately expressed amongst art valuers about the attribution of unsigned paintings to given individuals, it is with a little apprehension that Ramsay's coeval portrait of The Prince is displayed here at all - let alone used as the Frontispiece of a forthcoming book entitled Rebellious Scots to Crush edited by Arran Johnston. It was Arran Johnston who first drew the Trust's attention to this work lodged as it is in an archive at Derby Library and Museum.

But we are glad he did. With La Tour being questioned, we have a safe retreat.
